Online Horse Racing Betting Tips

The first thing you should look at for each horse is its trainer. While past race performance is definitely a key indicator to be considered, researching a horse’s trainer will not only give you a sense of history and consistency, but may tip you off to up and coming champions; if a trainer especially has a winning history in his or her background, you can bet s/he’s doing something right.

A trainers history of performance is also important; he or she should have a high percentage of wins..

Now, look at a horse’s recent performance, within the last three races, and whether they placed first, second, or third. This gives you an excellent indicator of current performance; a promising horse or even current champion can be sidelined by injuy or have performannce affected by age, while up-and-comers may be getting their feet under them and getting better with each performance.

So don’t just look for favorites, but look for promising “underdogs” as well. Horses who placed within two lengths of the winner in their last three races should also be considered and will also give you nice odds.

Then, what surface is the race being held on? Certain horses do better on grass, others dirt, others on sand. Then look at the horses’ histories and pick a horse who does well on the track surface that’s being run on. Horses who’ve run a metropolitan track in their last race will also usually give you better odds than those who haven’t.

What is the layout and terrain of the track? Is it uphill or downhill? Does it curve left or right? Different horses will have “preferences” and their histories will tell you what they run best on if you study tracks they did well on.

Next, look at the distance of the race you want to bet on. Some horses are better at shorter distances while others are built for endurance, and the horses’ parentage is also important here, since heredity plays a role. You should look at whether a particular horse’s parent’s were sprinters or stayers as well as any information on the horse itself. Along with track surface, this should further narrow your choices for optimal picks.

The weather is also a key factor; although you won’t be able to research this far in advance, if you make your picks the day of the race, you can choose a horse that runs best on wet, firm or dry ground, which depends on whether it has rained or not.

Don’t rely on tote odds from your home state. Instead, focus on beating the races for the best tote odds.

Before each race, research your picks carefully using the above tips. Several sites blog on horse races and are free, giving updates on track surfaces and newsworthy items. One such example is: http://virtualracing.blogspot.com/; the (UK) site also offers the opportunity to “buy” and bet on your own horse.

Others such as http://www.youbet.com/ offer members the opportunity to watch and wager on races held worldwide from the comfort of their home computers.
